Chess is a two-player strategy board game played on a checkered board with 64 squares arranged in an 8×8 square grid. Played by millions of people worldwide, chess is believed to be derived from the Indian game chaturanga sometime before the 7th century. Chaturanga is also the likely ancestor of the East Asian strategy games xiangqi, janggi, and shogi. Chess reached Europe via Persia and Arabia by the 9th century, due to the Umayyad conquest of Hispania. The pieces assumed their current properties in Spain in the late 15th century, and the modern rules were standardized in the 19th century.
The Origin Story of Chess
It is said that before 2000, India had a very cruel king. Be arrogant and do whatever you want. The king has a close minister, he wants to use the principle that "the king cannot exist without the people" to persuade the king, but he dare not put forward his opinions publicly. He came up with a suggestive method: On a wooden chessboard, two armies were formed with bone chess pieces to fight; on each side there is a leader-the king, and there are four types of vehicles, horses, elephants, and soldiers. Assembled into a whole lineup, the king is the most important piece. Once the king dies, the battle is over; the king is also a very weak link. He can only rely on his comrades—that is, other stronger pieces to protect. These pieces must Work together to defend the king throughout the battle.
The Culture of Chess Pieces
There have been many wonderful changes in the name and gender of the queen in chess. In Shatratz's time, the queen chess piece represented "lawyer", "chiller" or "general." Later, the French changed the form of the queen a little bit and became the woman she is now. Bishop represents a very influential social class in the Middle Ages in Europe; the knight represents the cavalry who received formal military training in the Middle Ages in Europe, and later evolved into an honorary title to represent a social class. If the pawn in chess can reach the opponent's bottom line, it will "turn from a slave to a general" and can be promoted to any kind of pawn except the king. Although the soldiers who have been promoted come from "humble", they have the same power as the soldiers they have changed. This culture seems to give civilians more opportunities.
